heaven has myth that gandarvas played music
while apsaras the celestial nymphs danced along
t our forefathers walked up and down the hills of nepal,
performing outside, at the doors,
gathering grains and clothes offered for their sustenance.
they spread news through music before any media influence.
they composed folk, sang tales of battles and heroes,
they satirized feudalism, cried the dying soldiers woes.
we opened our eyes to the sight of the sarangi,
learned and mastered how to carve it.
its octaves run through our blood and no wonder
when we slide the bow across, the four strings surrender
and bleed to color the notes of eternal music.
we resonate the place we belong to the rivers, the forests,
chirping birds, croaking frogs, buzzing insects,
and the dancing butterflies the natural soundscapes.
we mix them with the local stories, accents and the dialects.
yes, we sing lively, the lives we encounter on the journey of our own.
they say we are untouchables but we touch their hearts
gandarvas or gainey we are the wandering arts.
[note: are the ethnic musician caste from central hilly region ofnepal. By tradition they make their living by singing and playing sarangi.
sarangi is a folk nepalese bowed string instrument (somewhat like violin) it is made up of a single piece of light woodconsists four strings made up of sheep intestine. The bow was traditionally strung with horse tail-hair
